Career Services goes virtual to connect students, alumni and employers

Congratulations to the Career Services staff for their successful launch of Southwest’s inaugural Virtual Career and Internship Fair held April 1-12.  Their hard work garnered national recognition by Achieving the Dream in ATD’s weekly Network Connection.

The new virtual format for the fair allowed students and alumni the opportunity to conveniently connect online with 28 participating employers from a variety of industries such as PFS Web, Memphis FBI, Regional One Health, Nike, City of Memphis, Jordan Aluminum, Kroger and the Memphis VA Medical Center.

“We decided to move our spring event online when the pandemic hit,” said Career Services Assistant Director Angela Banks. “We realized early on that an alternative to the traditional on-campus career event was necessary.” The staff invited students and alumni to have their resumes reviewed online and monitored requests throughout the event.

Career Services Director Brenda Williams said the event drew 577 unique visitors to the department’s website and 1,194 total visitors to the event’s landing page. “It was an enormous success for our students and the College,” said Williams. “We thank Diana Fedinec and Clint Norwood, from the department of Communications, Marketing and Community Relations, for their help in bringing this to fruition.”

Of the students and alumni who provided feedback about the career fair, 100 percent strongly agreed/agreed that the information shared at the event was helpful; 93 percent strongly agreed/agreed they would like the college to have more virtual career fairs and recruiting events.  After receiving such positive feedback from the attendees, the career services team plans to host more virtual events.
