High Impact Practices
Mindsets are our beliefs and perceptions about learning. They shape how we interpret difficult situations. Research shows they are critical predictors of academic performance, persistence, and motivations. At Southwest, we aim to investigate not only our own mindsets but also to investigate and discuss the ways that our mindsets (faculty and staff) impact the mindsets of our students. We also seek to employ simple strategies to improve student mindsets in the classroom and at the college more generally.
Learning Communities at Southwest involve co-enrollment of students in at least two classes per semester. The curricula of these courses are intentionally linked through faculty collaboration.
First-Year Experience at Southwest is designed to attract and retain Southwest students by providing wrap-around support and experiences of first-year students by introducing them to essential skills for college success and fostering a sense of belonging through a supportive campus community of faculty, staff, and peers. ACAD 1100 Academic Success Seminar, soon to be rebranded Saluqi Success Seminar, is a highly recommended college –level course that counts for three credit hours. It functions as a continuation of the new student orientation provided by the Advising office and acquaints students with the habits not only of the successful college student in general, but also of the successful Southwest student in particular.
Work-Based Learning at Southwest represents credit-bearing experience that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting, internships, practicums, clinicals, co-ops, and similar experiences are integrated with a class or related to a major field of study.
Undergraduate Research at Southwest is an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual, scholarly activity, or creative contribution to the discipline and for which the student receives academic credit either through a course or independent study.
Technology Enhanced Learning
Technology Enhanced Learning at Southwest employs instructional practices that leverage digital technologies to enhance teaching and learning. Digital technology is any electric tool, system, device, or resource that facilitates learning and improves student performance. Technology Enhanced Learning at Southwest includes, but is not limited to, ePortfolios, social media, online games, virtual, augments, and mixed realities, and the use of mobile devices in the classroom.
Study Abroad at Southwest is a credit-bearing experience incorporated into general education or college core requirements for a certificate or degree program. Curriculum includes field-based ‘experiential learning’ in locations outside the United States with an emphasis on inter-cultural understanding and communication. Students apply what they are learning in a real-world setting and reflect on their experiences abroad as part of the course requirements.
Southwest is excited to offer one week study abroad programs in 7 countries. International Studies is here to answer questions, provide resources, and support to students in all majors wishing to enhance their college education by studying abroad.
Certifications are identifiers that a student has completed a qualification for an industry or a particular skill area. Certifications refer to credit-bearing courses that curricularly enable a student to take an assessment leading to industry-recognized certification.
